The PiP is used to receive a sample of urine.  By decanting a portion of urine out, using the divider within the chamber of the PiP and in line with the Instructions for Use, around 7ml of urine can be poured into a 10 ml boric acid tube ready to be sent to the pathology laboratory for urinalysis.  Instructions for use can be found here

Urine collection devices are used to sample a mid-stream urine sample that can then be further tested where there is a suspicion of urinary infection or where it is desirable to rule out a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).

Pulp products are biodegradable. The PiP can also be macerated.  Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Vernacare have both independently validated the maceration of the PiPs.  It is recommended that up to 3 PiPs are macerated in one cycle, other maceratable items can be added to the macerator with the PiPs.

No, the PiP is proven to be a clean, safe alternative to sterile plastic when collecting a mid-stream urine sample.

The microbiological safety of the PiP has been rigorously tested and compared to collection of a MSU using a sterile plastic vessel, demonstrating equivalency in terms of the reported negative and positive culture rates.

The laboratory requirements are that you need to ensure that the boric acid tube you use at ward level fits with the urine analyser in the pathology lab.  Somerset NHS Foundation Trust use a BD Urine Analyser and the 10ml DWK boric acid tubes fit without being too snug within the analyser enabling the urine sample to be loaded easily and removed by the laboratory assistant when using the urine analyser. 

The boric acid 10ml tube must only be filled with around 7ml of urine from the PiP and no more or it may leak when analysed.
